We are doing World War One projects. We started the projects last week and we nearly finished them. We were split up into five groups of four. Each person in a group got at least two things to do.In each group they have to have at least two wildcards. Wildcards are two cards with facts on them that extra bits of information about World War One. At the end each person put out their facts together and put them onto a big sheet.

Project work:

Over the past few weeks the senior room have been working on projects in History. The fifth and sixth classes have been doing projects on the Munster and Ulster Plantations. The third and fourth classes have been doing projects on The Stone Age. In science the senior room have been learning about tectonic plates, earthquake and volcanos. We drew pictures of the three different types of earthquakes. A divergent boundary plate is where the two plate go opposite ways. A transform plate boundary is where the tectonic plates rub of each other. A convergent plate boundary is where one plate goes underneath the other.

Science Work

Last week we did a science experiment about conduction. We first filled a balloon with water and put it over a lit flame. The balloon put out the flame and after waiting a few seconds you could lift up the balloon with jar because the flame needs air to keep it going and the water in the flame took out all the air so it went out and since there was no air the balloon stuck instead. Each class made their own one and it was lots of fun.

The Life Cycle of a Bird Projects

Yesterday, the Senior Room made projects about the life cycle of birds. Some groups did projects on chickens. Others did projects on other birds like eagles or turkeys. Every single one of the children put an amazing amount of effort in their projects and they all came out very well. Have a look at the photos below. – Cormac

The life cycle of an eagle was done by Seán, Katie and Jamie. First looked up stuff about the life cycle of an eagle. Then we made each stage of an eagle out of play dough. We also made a back round and did a little video on what we did. The projects are now being displayed in the hall. By Seán

Christmas Art:

As it is the last week of school for 2018 we were making Christmas decorations. Sir showed us a video of how to do the decoration first and then we had to do it our self. First you have to get a sheet of paper and fold it into a triangle and then you cut the end off. Then you fold it again and cut slits in it getting smaller each time. After, you open it up and colour both sides in whatever colours you want. Then you get the two inside bits and stick them together, and then get the next two out from that and stick them together on the other side, and keep going until you’re are done.

Have a read of our group, five minute free writing task stories below!

It was the day the moon fell out of the sky! I saw it coming towards me like a boulder. I was scared. I was having a great day until I saw it squishing birds. Then I said I will just finish this game of fortnite, BOOM victory royale. After that it fell on me and I died.

It was the day the moon fell out of the sky. It landed in our back garden. It killed our neighbours cat Patrice. We lifted the moon with the front loader and we stacked it on top of the bales. Later that day a search and rescue team were out looking for the moon.

It was the day the moon fell out of the sky. I was just after paying €100 for a massive ice-cream when the moon fell on my ice-cream. Then banana birds came along and fell in love with the moon and they flew back to space.

By Sean, Aoife and Seamus.

It was the day the moon fell out of the sky.it destroyed everyone except me. The streets were empty, but I heard something grunting. Suddenly Peppa Pig and the three little pigs jumped out, they huffed and the puffed and they blew the city down. They turned towards me and licked their lips but a massive explosion blew them up and out came an army of pizzas. The general said, ’at Antonio’s Pizza Place if you buy 3 pizzas you get the last one free’. So I went to Antonio’s and had three pizzas.

Science Work:

This week in Science we worked on sound in the Senior Room. We were in four groups. We got some toilet rolls and some plastic. Firstly, we put some of the plastic on the tops and bottoms of the toilet rolls. Then we made a small hole (the size of a pencil hole) in the top of it. Then we held the toilet rolls at two or three centimetres to one side of a candle. If you did it properly you would see the end of the toilet roll moving up and down. This is called vibrations.

Leafman Art:

The senior room have been doing lots of Autumn themed work this week. We have been doing art out of leaves, based on the book Leaf Man. We did all kinds of animals and leaf people and we used all different colours of leaves. Ms. Grogan has been teaching us all about photosynthesis and how plants produce oxygen. We are all in the Autumn mode this week!

——–

Photosynthesis Experiment: We did an experiment about how plants produce oxygen and how if plants are dead they will not produce oxygen and if they are active they do produce oxygen. We got a bowl of water and we put an active leaf in one bowl and the dead leaf in another bowl. If the leaf is dead nothing should happen to it but if the leaf is active, oxygen will appear in the form of bubbles around the bottom of the leaf. We proved that this is true.

Martin’s Big Words- Building Bridges Work:

The last two weeks we have been reading a book called Martin’s Big Words. It is based on the life of a man called Martin Luther King. It was a really good book and everyone enjoyed reading it. It was very interesting. It showed about his life growing up in Alabama and how white people were so racist. It was very hard for the black people. Did you know that if a black person was sitting down on the bus they had to give up their seat for a white person if they asked? We learned about some of his phrases like ‘hate can’t overcome hate only love can do that’. Martin was a protestant preacher and helped out a lot with the church. Martin made the ‘I have a Dream’ speech. After the white people heard that they started to realised the wrongs they had done and became nicer people and there was less racism. Overall it was a very good book and I definitely enjoyed It!

Fire Station Visit:

On Tuesday last the whole school went to Elphin Fire Station. To start they brought we had a look and the fire jeep it has all the road signs tools for and had powder for if there was oil on the road. They would put the powder oil and it would dry up the road and would be safe to drive on again. Afterwards we move onto the fire truck and the showed us all the equipment for the fires. There was six 25meter pipes that all added up to 150meters of water pipes. There is 2000litres of water in the fire engine. We got to go inside them and have a look. The last thing we did was look at the cutting equipment. They have two main cutting tools. One was for cutting out a door and the other for cutting the roof or thinner mettle.

by Jack

On the 15th of November we went to the fire station. First we went into the office and they told us to stay outside the cones. We looked at the jeep and in the jeep were cones and signs. Then we went to look at the fire truck. The fire truck had a generator for the water and all the tools in another place. We had a good time at the fire station.

Kensuke’s Kingdom.

After finishing The Mozart Question, Ms Grogan and the children have progressed on to another book also by Michael Morpurgo called Kensuke’s Kingdom. It is about a boy called Michael and one child thought perhaps it was based on the author’s life because of the same first name. Many of the children are wondering who Kensuke is. So far, it is about a boy and his parents who start to get on very badly after they are made redundant. Michael’s father eventually decides to bring his family to live in a boat called Peggy Sue. We shall inform you who Kensuke is when we find out! Here are some examples of the visualisations we created, when reading the first chapter.

The Mozart Question.

Recently, the Senior Room have been reading a book called The Mozart Question with Ms Grogan. It is about a girl called Leslie who has to interview a famous violinist under the strict instruction to not ask him “The Mozart Question”. As well as reading the book, the Senior Room have been making predictions and connections about the story. Several children were wondering about what the Mozart Question was. A few think it is related to the family of the violinist. Ms Grogan got the children to draw a picture of how they imagine the violinist’s room after reading the description of it in the story. They also drew pictures of Leslie and the violinist with thought bubbles above their heads, to show what they are thinking. We are still wondering about what The Mozart Question is and we will let you know when we find out. Here are some of our visualisations.

Update (29.9.2015)

The Mozart Question Answered.

The Senior Room and Miss Grogan recently finished The Mozart Question. Paolo told Leslie about his childhood. The Mozart Question turned out to be “Why do you never play Mozart?” The answer was that Paolo’s father felt so guilty about playing Mozart on his violin to keep people calm while they waited to be killed in the gas chambers during World War Two that he made Paolo promise to never play Mozart until he died. Paolo tells Leslie that his father died two weeks ago and at the concert in London for his fiftieth birthday he would play Mozart for the first time. The children decided that The Mozart Question was Narrative Writing and the children did an activity in groups where you match the story up to the type of writing it was. The children learned about the types of writing. Then fifth and sixth class pretended they were Leslie and wrote a report about the answer of The Mozart Question. Third and fourth class wrote a fact file about Paolo’s life. We have now finished with The Mozart Question and will be moving onto another book. You will hear about this soon!

My Confirmation Day

On May 5th it was our Confirmation day and we had it in Kilglass church. It was a very small church and there were so many people there that most of the families had to stand up. The other schools that were there were Ballyfeeney, Rooskey, Slatta, Scrabbagh, Dangan and us. After we were confirmed we got photos with the Bishop individually and as a class. Then I went home and had lots fun with my family and my relations. I had an excellent Confirmation day.

My Confirmation Day.

I made my confirmation in Kilglass Church. The mass started at 11 0’clock. We all met up with each other and talked for a few minutes. The people that were bringing up the symbols brought them up at the start of the ceremony. I brought up the oil of Chrism. This oil was put on our foreheads by the Bishop, when we told him the names that we taking for our Confirmation. The other gifts that were brought up were: grapes and bread, the bible, a book about religion, candle and a poor box. Later on we knelt in front of the bishop and he said ‘be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit’. Our reply was  ‘Amen’. The bishop then said ‘peace be with you’. We answered,  ‘And with your spirit’. After the mass we got our pictures taken with the bishop. The mass was over at 1 0’ clock.

American Revolution.

The 6th and 5th class are doing a project on the American Revolution. We learned that the whole revolution was started over a stamp for taxes. Also that there was a famous thing that happened it was called The Boston Tea Party. This is where the Americans dressed up as Indians and boarded an English ship and threw all the tea off the ship. When the English found out they were furious. This led to the first battle of the American Revolution  which was called the Battle On Bunker Hill. The 6th and 5th are doing this on Power point on their laptop.

The Olympic Games

During the week 5th and 6th class learned about the Olympic Games. According to legend the Olympic Games were founded by Heracles, son of Greek god Zeus. At first the Olympics only had one event. The first recorded games were in 77 BC. Women were not allowed to enter or watch the games. The Roman Emperor, Theodosius, Banned the games in 393 AD. This marked the end of what we call the Ancient Olympics. Fifteen centuries later Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Women were allowed to compete from 1900 onward. In 1912 Baron de Coubertin designed the famous symbol of the Olympics, the five rings. The rings symbolise world unity. Later Baron de Coubertin thought up the Olympic motto ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger ’. In 1960 the Paralympic Games were introduced for people with physical disability.

At the night before the wedding Gráinne fell in love with one of Fionn’s army. She decided to run away with him. When Fionn woke up he was furious to find Diarmuid and Gráinne missing. He could not find them. Gráinne and Diarmuid were never found. Lisa (12.09.14)
