Michael Bell

During Science Week, on Tuesday 13/11/18, A man called Michael Bell came to our school to talk about nature. He showed us a stuffed Pine Martin, a slide show on the computer about nature, flowers and animals. Then we went outside to find stuff like different kinds of trees, birds and insects. We found an elder leaf, some worms and we saw a wagtail. We had a silent moment to see how many natural and unnatural things we could find. We had a great time. The pictures are in the gallery.

Arigna Mines

On account of Science Week, we went to the Arigna Mines as a trip. We went on the bus at half ten, and arrived in Arigna at around a quarter past eleven. We watched a short DVD first about the mine, while the little room were in the mine. We went down the mine after them. The first thing that we had to do was put on our hairnets and hardhats and then we met our tour guide Seamus. The first thing he showed us was a map of what the mine was like, and then he brought us down a path where he showed us a few stuff about the stalagmites and the stalagmites and then he showed us one of the little tunnels that the workers had to crawl into to get the coal out. Then he showed us the coal cutter and told us how it works. He then showed us the thing that hauls the hutch’s full of coal down and the empty ones back up and he turned it on and off. He showed us one of the mine shafts. Then he showed us an explosion and told us all about them and how the guy in charge was the fires man, and then the tour was over.

Library Quiz

Well done to our quiz team, of Heather, Coman, Darragh and Cormac who came first in the Strokestown Library Quiz. They now go forward to the county library quiz in December. Some of the questions were hard enough but some of them were easy. In the end we only won by 2 points. The teams that came second and third were Roosky and Tulsk.

Swimming

We are just after finishing swimming in the Aura Centre in Carrick. The swimming went on for seven weeks and we all enjoyed it. Every Thursday we would go swimming for forty-five minutes and for the last five we would have play time. On the last day we had five minutes extra play time. We would like to thank aura for teaching us and helping us learn to swim.

Maths Week

Maths Week took place from the 15th to the 19th of October. During Maths Week we took place many different activities such as the sweet jar, maths trail, problem solving and many more.

In the sweet jar there was 428 sweets and the person who guessed the closest amount got to bring the sweets home. Saoirse guessed the closest amount as she guessed 424. So she won the jar of sweets.

In the middle of Maths Week we had a maths trail. We were all split into groups of four and we had to look for things related to maths. We were outside and inside for this activity.

There was also lots of problem solving. There were picture ones and normal ones. We all had to make our own picture sums as well and then swap them with each other. Every ones picture sums were excellent.

Everyone had a great week and we all enjoyed it. All the pictures from Maths Week can be found in gallery.

Shoeboxes

All children from Junior Infants to 6th Class have filled Shoeboxes to give to the poorer countries around the world again this year and we put plenty of nice gifts into our shoeboxes. The children made lots of effort to make these shoeboxes and I hope the children who get these shoeboxes will be very happy with what they get. They put lots of nice gifts like sweets, toys and hats into their shoeboxes and every single child in the school did great work on them.

Maths Hats

For Maths Week we made Maths hats. To do a Maths hat you had to get a hat, pick a maths topic such as a particular number or money and get things about your topic to put onto your hat. People did shapes, planets, money and numbers. Here are some examples and the pictures of all the hats can be seen in the Gallery Section.
