On Wednesday, the Defence Forces from Athlone Barracks came to present our school with the Tricolour flag and a copy of the proclamation for the upcoming hundredth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. This took place in the Senior Room and the classes in the Junior Room came in to see it. Three members of the army came. First, one of them told the children about the 1916 Rising and what happened, as well as why they were presenting us the flag and proclamation. He read the first half of the proclamation and a sixth class student read the second half. Another one of the men taught the children about the flag and how to treat it. Then the flag and proclamation were handed to the two sixth class students, Rachel and Alicia and pictures were taken. Last of all, the children were allowed to ask the army questions abut the Rising, what they did outside of the army, and what it was like to be part of the Defence Forces. Other pictures were taken outside. Now, we have the flag and proclamation for the hundredth anniversary of the Rising in April, 2016. See pictures in the gallery section.
